Driven Hunt

“The snow had not melted… their tracks remained, and whoever wished could read them.” — István Fekete

Once agricultural crops have been harvested, the habitat of big game becomes restricted to forests and reed beds. As the leaves fall, impressive numbers of game often gather in dense cover and undisturbed areas of the winter forest. This provides an opportunity for hunters to see, even in a single day, an amount of game that would otherwise be almost impossible.

During driven hunts, areas covering several thousand hectares may be worked in a single hunting day for groups of 20–25 hunters. With the assistance of local staff, professional drivers, and hunting dogs, as many as 50–100 head of big game may be taken in a day. Depending on the characteristics of the hunting ground, most of the bag typically consists of wild boar, red deer hinds, or fallow deer hinds, but mouflon ewes and lambs, roe deer females, foxes, and golden jackals may also be taken during driven hunts. On such hunting grounds, game managers often prepare for the driven hunt throughout the entire season, so as a guest hunter, good marksmanship and solid experience in shooting running game are essential.

The basis of settlement is the hoofed game taken. On our excellent partner hunting grounds in Vas, Veszprém, and Zala counties, wild boar usually make up the greater part of the bag.

Recommended period: late November – late January
